1.55 Design for... Flashcards
(7 cards)
How to minimise materials during design
-Use the minimised raw materials necessary to achieve the required strength and function
-Apply material selection- lighter/ recyclable materials
-Consider standard sizes of materials- reduce waste during cutting/ shaping
How to simplify manufacturing processes
-Choose processes with fewer steps/ less energy intensive- eg injection moulding
-Reduce reliance on complex/ specialised equipment
How to minimise packaging material
-Use just enough packaging to cover the product- avoid over packaging
-Packaging material should be lightweight and recyclable
-Materials that can be reused and recycled
Design to reduce wasted space
-Design packaging that is close fitting to the products shape
-Use flat pack/ modular packaging to optimise transport and storage
Reduce Components
-Aim for integrated design- fewer components that perfrom multiple functions
-reduces assembly time, costs and maintenance
Reduced environmental impact
-Design with entire product lifecycle in mind- raw material to disposal
-use sustainable, recyclable and biodegradeable materials
-apply eco design principles- reduce emissions and harmful finishes such as lead paint
Environmental and economic benefit
-Less packaging- cover material cost and reduced shipping weight
-Smaller packaging takes up less space during transport- fewer journies- reduced emissions
-Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of eco-friendly packaging- improve brand image
