16
Q

What is the difference between evidence-based and evidence-informed practice?

A

Evidence-based practice involves scientific inquiry and research to “prove” what works; in social sciences, issues are often more complex and cannot be fully understood in this way.

Evidence-informed practice is the use of available research in conjunction with professional values/ethics, worker judgement, and client situations

17
Q

Are social workers considered Regulated Health Professionals?

A

No: social workers are considered to be within the Ministry of Community and Social Services (MCSS); the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care oversees professionals like nurses and psychiatrists, causing some confusion on our role in mental health

18
Q

What tasks/roles set social work apart from other professions?

A

None; there is no intervention that only a social worker can provide. Instead of what we do setting us apart, it is how we do it

19
Q

What is the significance of the Dodo bird verdict/Project MATCH?

A

-The largest randomised controlled trial ever conducted
-Demonstrated that no one treatment modality (CBT, 12-Step, MI) was consistently superior to others in the treatment of alcohol abuse

20
Q

What is Bogo & Vayda’s Integration Loop used for?

A

-Addressing disconnects between a social worker’s own principles and what they observe in the field
-A process for learning that encourages an intentional response rather than mindless reaction

21
Q

What are the 4 steps of Bogo & Vayda’s Integration Loop?

A
  1. Retrieval (of facts about the situation)
  2. Reflection (of self + other factors)
  3. Linkage (of theory + other knowledge)
  4. Professional response

These steps continue in a coil-like set of loops that repeat and build on one another

22
Q

What were Calderwood & Rajesparam’s main critiques of the concept of Codependency? (5)

A

-Lack of agreement on a definition + overinclusiveness (anyone can fit criteria)
-Sexism: most literature makes reference to women being codependent; inhibits independence/autonomy; does not differentiate from showing care/support; assigns responsibility and labels partner as an enabler
-Little research, and that which has been done is dated, with many limitations
-Assumes a western, nuclear family dynamic
-Treatment of “codependent” partner in isolation, by paraprofessionals with shared personal experience

23
Q

What are the top 6 fields of social work practice:

A
  1. Adult mental health/addiction
  2. Hospitals
  3. Child/youth mental health

A
  1. Administrative
  2. Supportive
  3. Clinical
26
Q

What are the top 5 factors that positively impact social work job satisfaction?

A
  1. Work environment/team culture
  2. Meaningful work/making a difference
  3. Autonomy in practice
  4. Effective leadership
  5. Access to and quality of supervision
27
Q

What are the top 5 issues that negatively impact social work job satisfaction?

  2. Insufficient resources
  3. Increased documentation
  4. Volume of work
  5. Lack of social work supervision
28

The OCSWSSW is a regulatory body that protects the public from unqualified, incompetent, and unfit practitioners

29
Q

Where did Evidence-Based Practice originate?

A

McMaster medical school, 1990s

30
Q

What are some limitations of evidence-based practice? (5)

A

-Underutilisation of clinical expertise/personal perspectives
-Failure to consider personal background, experience, etc.
-Issues of power in research
-Can be inconclusive, contradictory, nonexistent/inaccessible, and difficult to apply to individual cases

31
Q

What are the 5 overlapping factors that influence micro-level decision making in social work?

A

-Clinical experience
-Service user preference
-Worker values/self-reflection
