France + Britain fear Germany’s large naval fleet, that has grown to surpass them. They ally and form the Entente Cordiale in fear.

One example of alliances worsening war was the Moroccan Crisis (1905 & 1911). Britain was dragged in between France and Germany, which worsened the already bad bond with Germany. This proves that alliances involves even more countries than originally, turning a small war into a “world” war.

The Triple Alliance, formed between Austria-Hungary, Germany and Italy led to a split between Europe. Germany and Austria-Hungary had a BLANK CHEQUE in place- an unconditional promise.

Alliances give countries more confidence, as they know that whatever they do, they have someone backing them. Austria-Hungary and Germany had their BLANK CHEQUE, meaning Austria-Hungary was able to do more bold moves, such as providing Serbia with a harsh ultimatum and threatening to attack. This bold moves may have escalated and caused WW1.

Russia and Serbia also allied, as they felt a connection because both countries were mainly Orthodox Christian’s. Serbia hated Austria-Hungary, and it now seemed that the alliances caused a split between Europe, making war imminent. Some countries, e.g. Belgium, opted to stay neutral. This is as once an alliance is formed, it is obligatory to fight and back your allies. This also caused WW1, as the reason it was a “world” war was that many countries were forced to fight and back their allies, even if they were not directly included.
