Q

Explain why Russia protecting Serbia is important and linked to nationalism.

A

Russia felt the need to protect Serbia, as it was seen as the “mother” of Serbia. They had a connection through the Slavs that lived in both areas. Additionally, Russia had already lost against Japan, and wanted to not seem weak again. This is nationalistic, as it shows that the Russians care about their country and reputation, and want to be seen as a strong force.

Q

Explain Kaiser Wilhelm II’s nationalism and why it was important.

A

Kaiser Wilhelm II felt as though his country was being threatened. He was anxious to prove himself and his nation against all of the other nations. All countries themselves, e.g. Britain and France, all believed their nation was fighting for good. They believed that by fighting in the war, they were performing an act of patriotism.

Explain the significance of the Black Hand.

A

The Black Hand was set up in Serbia in 1911, to establish a greater Serbia. This is nationalistic, as it is one of the ways the Slavs’ desire for freedom affected the war. This is as this group ended up assassinating the Archduke of Sarajevo, which catapulted the world into war.

Q

Explain the significance of 1905-6/1911 when Germany was forced to back down from its threats to France.

A

Since Germany was forced to back down in 1905-6/1911, this attacked the pride of the country. This is as the Kaiser and the people are very nationalistic, and want their country to be the best. Therefore, this will have infuriated the Kaiser and made war imminent, as he would have been seeking a chance for revenge and to avenge his country…
