  1. Virginia could provide a base to attack Spanish shippings and settlements in the Americas, providing loots and booty
  2. Positive relations with the locals. English were able to barter goods with the locals and locals friendly towards the English (e.g Manteo and Wancheese (locals) came to England)
  3. Colony in Virginia would make it easier to organise other ventures. John Dee talk about founding a British Empire and Walsingham supported it.

  1. Colonists close to starvation, because the first colonists left England late to reach virginia in time to plant corps, leading to the colonists antagonised the locals to gain food (worsen relations)
  2. Wingina angered by the diseases that English brought into in 1586 and attacked the English, other tribes were angry with English demands for food.
  3. England was at war with Spain at 1585, leading to the colony left without support for 3 years.
