10
Q

in wet AMD what specific signs occur?

A

wet - new vessels forming in choroid layer and into retina
vessels can leak - oedema and vision loss

15
Q

how fast does neovascularisation present?

A

more acute than dry
vision loss in days and progress to complete blindness in 2-3yrs
can progress to bilateral

16
Q

what examinations would you do and why for AMD?

A

smellen chart - reduced visual acuity
scotoma - enlarged central area of vision loss
amsler grid test - can assess distortion seen on straight lines
fundoscopy - assess for drusen

17
Q

what would optical coherance tomography be used for?

A

OCT
cross sectional view of layers of retina
used to diagnose and monitor AMD

18
Q

when would you use fluorescein angiography?

A

contrast and photography of retina to assess for blood supply
can show oedema and neovascularisation

19
Q

how do you manage dry AMD?

A

no specific treatment
want to reduce risk of progression
avoid smoking
control BP
vitamin supplementation can slow progression

20
Q

how do you treat wet AMD?

A

anti VEGF medications
they block formation of new vessel formation
injection direct into eye once a month

21
Q

give an example of anti -VEGF medication?

A

ranibizumab
aflibercept
bevacizumab
