  • to turn aspirations into concrete change
  • to provide clear direction + motivation
  • to track your objectives and use your time and resources effectively

Why should we write our goals down?

A
  • to increase motivation and help narrow the focus
  • main reason = it increases your chances of achieving the goal
  • Dr Gail Matthews found that people are 42% more likely to achieve goals that are written down
  • Harkin et al (2016) found that monitoring progress increases goal attainment

What are SMART goals?

A
  • Introduced by Doran (1981)
  • Encourages people to define clear objectives and deadlines
    S= specific
    M= measurable
    A= achievable
    R= realistic
    T= time-bound

Work experience?

A
  • may be essential if you want to be accepted onto some courses
  • degrees aren’t always enough and employers want too see experience as well
  • is good as it allows people to test out the kind of jobs they want to get after graduation
  • can look on durham student services etc.

  • acts as an online CV
  • useful for searching job vacancies and researching companies
