Q

Two Ways A Microbial Population Can Acquire Antibiotic Resistance

A

1) Chromosomal mutation
2) R plasmids

The more an antibiotic is used the more resistant strains of bacteria.

Little or no research and development in antibiotics because there is no money in it, antibiotics are not used often

Q

Multiple Resistance and Cross-Resistance

A

Resistance to more than one drug at a time- most often occurs via R-plasmids

Most common in hospitals and nursing homes because of constant use of drugs, this eliminates sensative cells (natural selection)

Cross-resistance: resistance to similar drugs
