  • What are the duties of a convoy cdr?
A

o All vehicles are mechanically fit and the adequate spares and fuel, oil and lubricants are being carried out.
o EME cover is available for the journey.
o Medical cover is arranged before the convoy moves.
o Lists of all stores being carried should be prepared. Similarly nominal roll of troops being convoyed should be prepared including their weapons.
o Convoy is marshaled in the correct OOM.
o No vehicle moves or leaves the convoy without his order.
o In case of expected site of an IED, the convoy commander will task the engineer representative and the protection party to clear the site before taking the vehicles to site.

  1. What are the duties of an escort cdr? S2HED
A
  1. Detailed briefing of the escort party before move.
  2. Security of the convoy during move and at halts.
  3. Halt the convoys at places fixed prior to marching the convoy and resume move only when all vehicles have fetched up and joined the main body.
  4. Ensure that all suspected ambush sites enroute are known to troops including the escort party and that all concerned are absolutely alert while passing through such areas.
  5. Sites selected for halts in plains should be in an open stretch so that there is no danger of an IED exploding or convoy being ambushed.

  1. Preparation - As a convoy cdr, what are the information you would like to obtain before moving out?
A
  1. Condition of road.
  2. Whether the road is secured by road opening parties.
  3. Distance and time taken to reach the destination both in dry and monsoon seasons.
  4. Suspected ambush sites/IED’s site enroute should be marked on sketch/map and briefed accordingly.
  5. SF posts along the route.

  1. Action during move - what are the points to be borne in mind during the move of convoy?
A
  1. Each vehicle should be within sight of the vehicle in front and rear should be able to give support in case of encounter with hostiles.
  2. Two vehicles should preferably not be on the loop or bend of the road at the same time.
  3. After a convex turning the front vehicle should slow down to allow rear vehicle to close up.
  4. In case of plains, the distance between vehicles should be 100 to 200 meters. Density could even be decreased depending upon the threat.

  1. Action on halts - what are the points to be observed during halts? CHLEA
A
  1. Convoys are not halted at likely ambush site.
  2. High ground overlooking the area is not left unoccupied.
  3. Low ground and re-entrants below the road are covered by fire.
  4. Ensure all round defense.
  5. Attend to defective vehicles, if that be the reason for halt.
