During the 19th century, the British empire included around ⅓ of the world. Countries included Australia, Canada and New zealand. In these countries, women gained the right to vote before Britain. New Zealand in 1893 and Australia in 1902.

Britain was referred to as ‘The Mother of Democracy”. This meant it was embarrassing for Britain as women in her colonies had the vote but women in Britain did not. This may have put pressure on British politicians to give women the right to vote.
