Q

What is respiration used for in mammals?

A

Mammals need to release heat energy from food to keep their body temperature close to the optimum temperature for their enzymes to work.

Q

Explain the process of aerobic respiration

A

S1: Cytoplasm

  • Glucose is broken down to 2 molecules of pyruvate = releases enough energy to make 2 molecules of ATP. (no oxygen needed)

S2: Mitochondria

  • A pyruvate molecule enters the mitochondria, makes carbon dioxide and water
  • releases enough energy to make lots of ATP. (oxygen needed)
