Engine Start Checklist Continued Flashcards

1
Q

Actual engine start:

A
  1. The key should be placed into the ignition. Turning it 3 clicks to the right will set the ignition to both. One additional click will take it to start, which is spring-loaded, so you have to hold it.
  2. The engine can start immediately, or it can take a few rotations of the propeller. Regardless, you need to be ready for it because once it starts, you need to smoothly move the mixture control fully forward and release the starter key. After that, adjust the throttle to 1000 rpm and check that the oil pressure is within the green operating range.
  3. Check the load meter to verify that amps are positive, which means that batteries are charging, and verify the low volts annunciator has turned off.
  4. Lean the mixture by adjusting the throttle so the tachometer indicates 1200 rpm and turn the mixture control counterclockwise very slowly, watching the rpm slowly rise. Continue until the rpm starts to decrease. Then turn the mixture in the clockwise direction to regain that peak rpm.
  5. After the engine has leaned to peak rpm, adjust the throttle back to 1000 rpm.
  6. The engine start checklist is complete, so the pilot should announce “engine start checklist complete.”
