Bonding, structure, and the properties of matter Flashcards
What are Alloys?
A mixture of 2 or more elements and at least one of them is a metal
What is metallic bonding?
A giant structure of atoms, arranged in a regular pattern
What are good conductors of electricity?
Delocalised electrons carry electrical charge through metal
What are good conductors of thermal energy?
Energy is transferred by the delocalised electrons
Which are the chemical bonds?
Ionic, Covalent and Metallic
What are Ionic chemical bonds?
Particles oppositely charged ions and it occurs in compounds formed from metals combine with non metals
What are covalent chemical bonds?
Particles are atoms that share pairs of electrons and it occurs in most non metallic elements and in compounds of non metals
What are metallic chemical bonds?
Particles are atoms which share delocalised electrons and it occurs in metallic elements and alloys
What are properties of ionic compounds?
High melting and boiling points, They don’t conduct electricity when solid and they conduct electricity when molten or dissolved
High melting points (Properties of ionic compounds)
Large amounts of energy needed to break the bonds
Doesn’t conduct electricity when solid reason (Properties of ionic compounds)
Ions are held in a fixed position in the lattice and can’t move
Conducting electricity when molten or dissolved reason (properties of ionic compounds)
Lattice breaks apart and ions are free to move
What is ionic bonding?
When electrons are transferred so that all atoms have full outer shells
(Ionic bonding) Metal atoms
They lose electrons and become positively charged ions
(Ionic bonding) Non metals atoms
They gain electrons to become negatively charged ions
