15.1 drugs Flashcards
(8 cards)
1
Q
drugs
A
any substance taken into the body that modifies or affects chemical reactions in the body
2
Q
types of medicinal drugs
A
antibiotics
3
Q
antibiotics
A
any substances taken into the body, which kills bacteria but doesn’t affect human cells
- mainly made from fungi
- kills bacteria without affecting body tissue
E.g Penicillin
4
Q
why doesn’t antibiotics work against viruses
A
viruses have no cell walls
5
Q
how antibiotics kill bacteria
A
1) ingest antibiotic
2) breaks down cell wall
3) stops bacteria from reproducing
6
Q
antibiotic resistance
A
- overtime, bacteria can become resistant to certain antibiotics
(example of natural selection) - in large population of bacteria, some may not be affected by antibiotic
- these survive & reproduce , creating more bacteria that are not affected
7
Q
what is resistant to most antibiotics
A
MRSA - methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus
8
Q
how to minimise development of antibiotic resistance
A
- avoid unnecessary use of antibiotics
- always complete full course of prescribed antibiotics
- develop new antibiotics to fight bacterial infections
