15.10 Acid-Base Properties Of Salts Flashcards

Q

Define salt hydrolysis. Categorize salts according to how they affect the pH of a solution

A

Salt hydrolysis is the reaction of an anion or cation of a salt, or both with water. Salts are strong electrolytes that completely dissociate into ions I’m water

A. Salts that produce natural solutions: salts containing alkali or alkaline metal except Be+2 and the conjugate bass of strong acid like Cl-, NO, NO3-, Br- . pH of the solution will be 7

B. Salts that produce basic solutions: salts derived from a strong base and weak acid is basic in nature. pH of the solution will be greater than 7

Q

Explain why small, highly charged ions are able to undergo hydrolysis

A

The extent of hydrolysis is greater for the smallest and most highly charged ions because a “compact”highly charged ion is more effective in polarizing the O-H bond and facilitating ionization
