15.9 molecular structure and the strength of acids Flashcards

1
Q

List four factors that affect the strength of an acid

A

The strength of an acid is determined by its tendency to ionize in a solution and to give a proton.

  1. molecular structure of the acid
  2. Properties of the solvent
  3. Strength of H-A bond, the stronger the bond the more difficult it is to release H+
  4. Polarity of H-A bond, a high degree of polarity means it is a stronger acid
