Lung Capacity 2 Flashcards
Describe Tidal Volume
-About 0.5 L
-During normal involuntary breathing, we use only small fraction of total capacity
Describe Inspiratory Reserve Volume
-Amount of air that can be forcibly inhaled after normal exhalation
-After normal breathing there is considerable amount of room left for more air.
Describe Expiratory Reserve Volume
-Volume of air that can be forcibly exhaled after normal exhalation
-Also there is a considerable amount of air left in the lungs
Describe Residual Volume
-Volume of air remaining in the lungs after a forced exhalation
-Prevents lungs from collapsing
-Even after expiratory reserve volume is exhausted there is still a volume of air left in the lungs
Describe Vital Capacity
The maximum amount of air that can be inhaled or exhaled
