What is a white spot lesion

A

Chalky white appearance due to increased porosity due to loss of mineral form the surface of the crystals
Clinically visible after 4 weeks
Hard to probe

What happens under the microscope after 1 week of plaque presence

A

Increased surface porosity
Dissolution of perikymata
Enlarged intercrystalline spaces/pores

What are liquefaction foci

A

Coalescing and broken down dentinal tubules
They fill necrotic debris
Increase in size by expanding causing adjacent tubules to distort

A

Within the sclerotic zone
Form due to the dying back of the odontoblastic processes into their cell bodies
