week 4 mass media Flashcards
what is traditional vs mediated interpersonal communication
traditional - two people and flows both ways
mediated - takes place through a medium eg: technology - generally non verbal and can be used for mass communication
content creators can…
represent and define reality to the public,
how does content creation decentralize content
there is no longer one central broadcaster, everyone can produce and broadcast to the world
how is surveillance a function of mass communication
alows us to cover issues happening in society and record and project them, however this can provide a skewed prospective
def correlation as a function of mass media
mass media helps us understand and connect ourselves to other groups around the world aswell as create empathy for people with different lived experiences
cultural transmission in mass media
dominant cultures dominate smaller ideologies, can be benifitial but also can be imperial and colonial
mass communication entertainment
helps us cope with reality, low culture forms of entertainment
what do all 4 funtions of mass media produce
stereo types
what is convergence?
the coming together of computing telecommunication and media in a digital environment eg: facembook, networking, pintrest
three types of convergence
technological
economic
cultural
what is techonological convergence
specific types of media such as print, audio and video all converge into digital media form
* digital media often change our use and perception of traditional technologies
examples: printed book vs ebook or public radio vs music on your phone
economic convergence
The merging of internet or telecommunication companies with tradition media companies
consolidation - companies become larger through this, larger companies own and operate smaller companies
eg: parent company - time warner has stakes in newspapers, magazines or tv
* corporate umbrella subsuming independent and dissimilar companies
* not always obvious that smaller companies are apart of larger ones to the average person
Cultural convergence
consumption, creation and distribution of content that is not reflective of culture consumer is from
shift from the public as a passive audience to public that produces and shares content cheaply
* american content taken up around the world or korea, brazil etc
- The hypodermic needle model
Another word for the transmissions model, created in response to propaganda
* this model suggests that media tells us what to think
* that it is a linear form of communication (receiver is passive)
Criticism - receivers are not passive and this about content they recieve
media injects us with ideas
- Media framing
media suggests to use what we should think about, people should make an informed judgement on content
* media that we are fed shapes the way we think about stuff though and how we think about it
* “media cultivates us to think about the world in certain ways and frame the world for us”
Organization of social knowledge and experience, media frames enable journalists to process and package large amounts of diverse and often contradictory information quickly and routinely
* eg: war on terror, east vs west, milennials, american dream - all of these sayings give us similar images in our minds because of how they have been repeatedly shown
