A

Argues that there is more diversity and choice that come in the postmodern era. People no longer feel the need to follow traditional ideas, can ‘pick and mix’ their family.

Lyotard = truth is subjective, so you choose the type of family that fits you the best (no ‘right’ answer).

Taking advantage of the increased choice. E.g: divorce extended family aka blended family. Provides emotional support and collaborated on childcare issues.

Whilst there is more choice/diversity, there is also chaos and uncertainty. Most people follow the traditional route as people are uncertain on what choices to make, so make the choices that the majority make.

A

Argues that little has changed in the family: only difference is that women do paid work. Neo-conventional family, as it is the same familial structure but one small difference.

Were one of the first to argue that widespread family diversity is now normal.

Cultural diversity, organisational diversity = the way each family is organised will be different in each family, social class diversity, generational diversity, etc.
