Parsons argued that the family functioned best when women took on the expressive role and men the instrumental: segregated conjugal roles.
However, since Parsons was writing in the 1950s, his views would be considered outdated as the expressive/instrumental roles are not biological, instead a social construction due to industrialisation.
Industrialisation forced women out of the workplace, creating the housewife role.
