Rates of Reactions Flashcards
1
Q
How is a rate of reaction obtained?
A
- By measuring the rate at which a product is formed
- Or at which a reaction is consumed
- over a series of time intervals
2
Q
Different ways to measure reaction rates? (5 ways)
A
- Amount of gas evolved
- Change in colour
- Change in mass
- Change in pH
- Change in conductivity
3
Q
Amount of gas evolved
A
Look if a gas is produced
4
Q
Change in pH
A
Has to have an acid or base involved
5
Q
Change in conductivity
A
- Will plateau eventually
- Look for free floating Ions (aq)
- Cuz ions conduct electricity
6
Q
How can reaction rates be presented graphically?
A
As a plot of concentration versus time
7
Q
Average Reaction Rate
A
- Change in reactant or product concentration over a given time interval
8
Q
Instantaneous Reaction Rate
A
Change in reactant or product concentration at a single instant in time
