Spartan middle class or BOURGEOISIE,the artisans and craftsmen

Were they considered free men?
They were allows to yes, they were allowed to work and live in the spartan state
What origin were the perioeci of?
Dorian origin. They were the inhabitants of the villages and the land taken over by the invading Spartans
How were they autonomous?
They had no citizen rights in Sparta but were the inhabitants of self governing villages with local citizenship.
Each village was watched over by a spartan magistrate appointed by the apella.
Te perioeci village was governed in accordance with spartan policy and law.
What were the majority of the perioeci?
Craftsman and artisans of Sparta.
They controlled trade, mining, manufacturing and fishing.
Others operated as merchants selling products to all social class.
