Q

What is the difference between Transgenic organism and a Genetic modified organism?

A

Trasngenic organisms are organsims that have changed their DNA by the introduction of a trans gene from another species artificially.
Wheras GMO is organisma that has been changed in any way by genetic engineering technology.

Q

Why was introducing the transgenic gene to canola for eg a good idea?

A

You can get rid of weeds with the pesiticde without killing the plant.

Q

What are some example of the use of GMOS in Agriculture

A
  1. You can incorporate genes to make the crop have more vitamins and nutrients for animals/people
  2. Incorporating a bacterial gene into the crop, that creates a toxin which kills insects that try to eat the plant
  3. Can increase Crop disease resitance to improve global food security

Q

What are some issues with GMOS in animals products

A

1.Vegetarians might be concered that animal genes might be used in plant products
2.Pig genes used in othwr animals, which is not accepted in some religions.

Q

Issues with GMOS in plants

A
  1. Labelling laws for people who are concered bout if the food contains GMO
  2. The spread of unatural genes from GMO to the enviorment, cross pollinating with the natrual plants
  3. Concern of losing the orignal source of a crop due to outcompeteing it.

Q

Whats so bad about the crops being genetically identical?

A

It becomes vunerable to dieases as a whole crop, without variation a strain of disease can affect all.

Q

Biological implications are what? GIve examples too

A

These affect ecosystems, enviroments or the public health
1Crops affect water systems
2Widespread of GMO crops could lead to loss of genetic diversity
3.GM crops could result in better productivity which means less land could be used results in reducing habitat loss

Q

What are social Implications

Give some ecamples too

A

These affect economies, politics and society
.Increases GM crops, increases crop growth which results in profits for farmers and increased food security.
Cost of GM crops for farmers cost
Legal issues with the use of GM crops

Q

Definition and examples

Ethical Complications

A

Issues related to moral or religious beliefs.
1. People believe its harmful to them
2. People think use of Genetic tech is unatural and not our say to do
3. People think not utilising GM tech for agriculture and health is wrong
