Chapter 12: reduction and oxidation Flashcards
What is the oxidation state?
The charge on an ion or in a molecule the charge that atom would have if the shared electrons in a bond we’re always given to the more electronegative atom
Name the rules of oxidation
1) for ions, composed of only one atom. The oxidation state is equal to the charge of the ion.
2) for all elements and home nuclear molecules. The oxidation state of each atom is zero.
3) molecules and polyatomic ions. The sum of the oxidation states must be equal the total charge.
4) the oxidation state of fluorine, and any compound is one minus
5) in covalent compounds and polyatomic ions each oxidation state of one plus
What is a Galvanic Cell?
A system that uses a redox reaction to produce electrical energy
What is an anode?
The negative electrode in a galvanic cell or battery
What is a cathode?
The positive electrode in galvanic cell or battery
What is electroplating?
Using reduction, usually powered by electricity to coat an object with metal
