What is secularism?
The principle of separation of state from religious institutions.
What features of the Christian Church were modelled after the Roman empire?
The organisational structure. The bishops and the Pope, head of the Church.
What is meant by two cities/world?
Man is on a journey to reach the Heavenly City which can only be done by obeying the teaching and rules of the church, established by Christ.
Fall of Roman Empire:
Long decline : 3rd to 5th century AD
Under attack by barbarians which led to internal instability.
395AD division of the Empire between east and west
476AD official fall.
Heir of Rome
After the fall of the Roman Empire, the Christian Church became the heir.
Why did the church become the heir of the roman empire
Through bureaucratic structure, organisational strength and civilizing ideology.
The first united europe?
The barbarians that destroyed the roman empire settled and created states. The german warriors supported christianity. Kings were legitimatized by divine right and anointed by priests.
Charlemange and the holy roman empire
He engaged in expansionism campaigns that led to the establishment of christianity among the tribes. First holy roman emperor.
Carolingian Europe
For intellectual elites of the West, it seemed like the glory of the former roman empire came back.
The territories of the holy emperor were named : carolingian europe
Why did charlemange commit to advance education in his empire?
Education is the christian way of life because it gives a better understanding of the holy scripture.
He also wanted to create an educated elite that would contribute a cultural and religious unity, thus a better governability.
What was the carolingian culture?
A mixture of christian, roman and german values: germanization christianity
