What is a patent?
A
A right that gives the right to stop others from using your inventions, or lets others use them but only under agreed terms.

What can you patent?
A
- New inventions - must not be made publicly available anywhere in the world
- Inventive - it cannot be an obvious change to something that already exists
- something that can be made and used, a technical process or a method of doing something.

What are some examples of things you CANT patent?
A
- literary, dramatic, musical or artistic works
- a way of doing business, playing a game or thinking
- a method of medical treatment or diagnosis.

What are some advantages and disadvantages of using patents?
A
- gives inventor exclusive rights - protection of intellectual property
- sparks innovation
- can charge for others to use it - generates revenue
BUT - designs become publicly available
- time consuming (3 to 4 years to obtain)
- costly
- patent times are limited - can only be renewed for 20 years.

What is copyright?
A
Copyright protects your work and stops others from using it without your permission.

copyright automatically covers?
A
- original literary, dramatic, musical and artistic work, including illustration and photography
- sound and music recordings
- film and television recordings
- broadcasts

What are some examples of what copyrights prevent people from doing?
A
- copying your work
- distributing copies of it, whether free of charge or for sale
- making an adaptation of your work
- putting it on the internet

What are the advantages and disadvantages of copyright?
A
- protects intellectual property
- financial incentives for creators
- long lasting e.g. films copyrights last 70 years after the death of director, screenplay author etc
BUT - stifles creativity as creators may hesitate to build upon existing works
- advancements in technology make it easier for people to copy and distribute work
- sensitive info made publicly available
