What do antibiotics do?
Treat specific bacterium,
Damage the bacteria eventually killing it.
Antibiotics do not effect human cells so they cannot treat viruses or protists.
What do antiseptics do?
Kill bacteria outside the body,
Too poisonous to use inside the body.
What do painkillers do?
Block your pain receptors
Providing pain relief.
What is antibiotic resistance? How does it come about?
→ mutation occurs creating a new strain.
→ strain is resistant to antibiotics so aren’t killed
→ bacteria survives and reproduces
→ resistant strain begins to spread.
What does aspirin do?
Lowers fevers,
Painkiller
What is digitalis used for?
Heart problems
What do you use to make aspirin?
Willow bark

What are the 3 stages of chemical development?

What is a placebo?
When you’re given a fake drug to study the psychological impact
What is a blind trial?
The doctor is aware of which patients have received a placebo.
What is a double blind trial?
Where neither the doctor nor patient are aware a placebo has been administered.
What do lymphocytes do?
Produce antibodies specific to the antigen
