Unit 2 Lesson 1 Flashcards

1
Q

Bacteria

A

A domain consisting of prokaryotes. They have a cell wall and reproduce by cell division

The domain bacteria has more individuals than all the other domains

They may be producers, consumers or decomposers

Q

Archaea

A

A domain made of prokaryotes. They are genetically very different from bacteria and have unique chemicals in the cell walls.
Some of the molecules in archaea are similar to the molecules in eukaryotes

Q

How do bacteria exchange DNA?

A

Transformation - bacteria take up DNA from the environment

Transduction - a virus injects DNA into bacteria

Conjugation - a plasmid is transferred from 1 bacteria to another when the 2 bacteria temporarily join together

Q

Endospore

A

Formed by bacteria during times when environmental conditions are harsh.
The bacteria are inactive
Made up of a thick, protective coating, the bacteria’s genetic material and its cytoplasm
