3.2 Plastics Flashcards
What is a ploymer?
A long chain molecule created by adding together multiple identical monomers
What is the process of reacting monomers together to form a polymer called?
Addition polymerisation
What characteristic makes hydrocarbons able to undergo an addition reaction?
Carbon-carbon double bond (C=C)
What properties must the monomers for addition polymerisation have?
They must be unsaturated
How should polymers be drawn?
With an open carbon bond at each end to show that this is a snapshot of a much longer chain
What is a repeating unit?
The shortest section of the polymer chain which, if repeated, would give the complete polymer chain (bar the end groups)
What is the only naturally occurring addition polymer?
Rubber
