Neolithic societies in NORTH China were making pottery early(er) as Southwest Asia.
Suggests necessity of storage, which suggests agriculture, surplus, and division of labor.
Agriculture in the North
was probably an independent development.
millet, sheep, goats, pigs, fish
not much rice/water buffalo till 1500 BCE (not much water)
wheat, barley (diffused 4000 - 1000 BCE) and rice replaced millet by 1000 BCE as staple

Painted Pottery Cultures
(banpo people)
Yangshao, Longshao
geometric red/black design, no wheel
lasted until 1500 BCE before merging into the Shang (literate, metal-using, city building)
Yangshao
from Gansu to Henan where it overlapped with Black Pottery (Longshan) culture –> wheel made, kiln fired (1000+ C)
