Lymphatic system Flashcards

1
Q

WHAT IS THE FUNCTION OF THE LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

A

to maintain balance of fluids by returning excess fluid to the heart

allows the absorptuionof large molecules into the blood stream
fscilliates the immune system

Q

HOW IS FLUID BALANCE MAINTAINED

A

protein and water seep out of the blood cappillaries and form part of the interstitial fluid which bathes the body cells with oxygen and nutrients

Q

what happens to the 20 litres of interstitial fluid produces in a day

A

17 litres are absorbed back into the blood capillaries and 3 litres are not

Q

escribe the structure of lymphatic vessels

A

they start of as lymphati cappillares and contain single layer endothelial cells

the lymph vessels are 1 cell thik and these cells have overlapping cells whoch act as a one way valve that directs fluid directly intothe circulatory system with ni back flow

Q

describe how lymph flows

A

when the pressure in the interstitial fluid is greater than the pressure in the lymph cappiliaries the valves open to allow fluid into the lympjh capillary

when the pressure of the interstitial fluyid is less than the pressure in the lymoph capillaries, the ymph nodes will snap shut

the lymph the travelsinto larger lymph vessels then into the lymph trunks and then the lymph ducts

Q

how ae the lymphatic ducts formed

A

they start as the lymph cappillaries then they join to make the lymphatic vessels which join to make the lymph trunks which then join to form the lymphatic ducts

Q

where are the lymphatic vessels located in he digestive system

A

they are located in the they are located in the wallsof the smll intestine and the digestive tract which has villi to increase surface area for nutrient absorption

the lympgh in the digestive sstem contains fat and is milky coloured and is called chyl

contractions of the walls of the lymph vessels and the valvbes that prevent backflow

Q

describe the l;ympyh nodes

A

the lymph nodes are ban or oval shaped and tgheir function uis to cleanse the lymph and detects any pathogens as it has b lymphocytes

they are more present in places prone to infection

Q

describe the lymphatic tissue

A

the lymphatic tissue is reticular and lymphoid tissue

reticular cells - produce reticulin fibres which provide stricture

lymphatic tissue- contains immune and defence cells and lymphocytes

Q

how many lymphatic trunks to we have

A

we have 9
2 lumbar trunks which drain the pelvis and lower limbs
2 bronchomediastinal which drain the chest
2 subclavian which deain the upper limbs
2 jugular which drain the neck
1 intestinal which drains the gut

16
Q

what are the secondary lymphoid organs

A

lymph nodes
spleen
tonsils
nasal associated lymphoid tissue
specialised lymph nodes i the gi tract

17
Q

what is the spleen

A

in the upper quadtrant or the abdomen
iti is a lymphoid organ which lies behind amd lateral to the stomach
the spleen stores red blood cells and platelets when the body needs it

18
Q

what is red pulp

A

red pulp acts as a filter for antibody coated bacteria
it contains anitbodies made by b cells
old red blood cells are destroyed in the pulp

19
Q

what is white pulp

A

white pulp is like a large lymph node which contains b lymphocytes which bind to foreign substances to eliminate them

20
Q

what are peyers patches

A

these are the lymphoid tissue in the GI tract and they are foud in the walls of the distal small intestine and they are concentrate in the distal ileu where they form a lymphoid rig which keeps pathogent at bay and keep intestine flora and appropriate levels

21
Q

WHAT ARE TONSILS

A

TONSILS ARE LYMPHOID ORGANS WHICH CONSTIST OF THE ADENOID, LINGUISTIC, PATALINE, AND TUBAL TONSILS
They form a ring of lymphoid tissue arouund the phraynx which works to trap pathogens fromn the food we eat and the air we breath

22
Q

wht are the primary lymphoid organs

A

thymus and bone marrow where lymphocytes are made

23
Q

whatis the thymus gland

A

it is a lymhoid organ located in the upper chest
the thymus gland iss involved in the production of T lymphocytes and they fight off infection

they also ensure to destroy any T cells that react to the bodies own antigens

24
Q

what is the bone marrow

A

this is where lymphocytes are made
