Q

What is a big difficulty when assessing intelligence?

A

Apparent intelligence - when an animal does something which we perceive as intelligent but in reality it is based on something quite simple e.g decided by genetics

Q

What is the social brain hypothesis?

A

The idea that social complexity drives the evolution of intelligence. If one animal is more intelligent in a group this drives a positive feedback loop between individuals in social intelligence. Intelligence is also needed to deal with the novel challenges that social living brings

Q

What was shown about “guilty” dogs?

A

We are unable to predict when they are guilty, seems to be more of a response to being told off

Q

What do scrub jays do which could be interpreted as evidence for knowing what other animals are thinking?

Q

What is a reason theory of mind could have evolved?

A

Social organisation revolves around cooperative breeding (we are the only great ape that shows this behaviour)

Q

What are the limitations of non-human language?

A
  • Language is not communication. Need syntax (rules for formation of grammatical sentences)
  • Apes mainly communicate requests
  • Little evidence for metaphor or creativity
  • Human language used for “time-travel” (express tense)
