Bio1 - Osmosis (potato chip in three test tubes) Flashcards

1
Q

What are the three (/multiple) test tubes filled with in the osmosis practical (different substances) ?

A

One is filled with distilled water, the other is filled with 1/2 concentration of sugar / salt solution, the other is filled with a full concentration of sugar/salt solution

Q

What is the method for the osmosis practical? (6 parts)

A
  1. Use cork borer to cut 5 potato cylinders with same diameter.
  2. Use scalpel / ruler to trim and ensure all same length
  3. Measure initial mass of each and record in table of values
  4. Measure 10cm ³ of each sugar / salt solution and pour into each boiling tube. Label each clearly (one should be distilled water)
5.add a potato cylinder to each tube and leave for specified amount of time.
  5. Remove potatoes. Leave to dry and record final mass/length for each.
