A

A measure ranking 156 cities’ level = globalisation. Takes into account:
- amount of business activity
- level of political engagement
- cultural experience offered to people
- ways info can flow through the city (internet connection)
- no. of people who create global connections (e.g. foreign-born)

A
  • measure of 195 countries’ level of globalisation
  • index measure 42 variables covering indicators of economic, social, political globalisation
  • combines them 2 produce an overall score b/ 1(low levels of globalisation) + 100 (high levels)

Why are some countries ‘switched off’ untouched by globalisation.

A

Physical geography- e.g. physical isolation due to mountain belts/deserts
Political decisions - e.g. countries may favour nationalist policies
Lack of economic development - e.g. poverty may stop a country being able 2 trade competitively
Environmental resilience - e.g, countries may be highly vulnerable 2 climate change - may limit their ability to trade cash crops

North Korea largely ‘switched off’ from globalisation

A

Country has pursued an isolationist, socialist regime - pursuit of isolationism means connections w/ other countries through trade + politics are v restricted
Country’s economy = based on ideology of self sufficiency which concentrates the production of goods on the immediate needs of its citizens rather than on making trade connections with countries
NK has limited physical communication connections w/ other countries (internet cabling) = restrict people’s exposure to info + ideas from overseas

What has NK done to allow some external influences

A

Since a period = famine + rapid economic downturn = 1990s NK has appealed for + accepted international aid from capitalist economies e.g. SK + USA
2 Korean countries competed together in a unified team = some sporting events including ice hockey = 2018 Winter Olympics
2018 NK leader Kim Jong-Un met President Donald Trump at a summit = Singapore where they committed to a partial denuclearisation of NK + lifting of some sanctions
