TBI Flashcards
What is a TBI?
acquired traumatic brain injury that affects lang., cognition, behavior, and memory
Types of TBI
open, closed, focal, diffuse, coup and countrecoup
What is an open TBI
brain is exposed, penetrating wound to the skull
what is a closed TBI?
no penetrating wound to the skull
what is a focal TBI?
injury to specific area of the brain
what is a diffuse TBI
injury across several areas of the brain, injury is spread out (hair dryer)
what is a coup TBI
injury at point of impact
what is a contrecoup TBI?
injury opposite point of impact. (hitting one spot of head and other side gets injured)
acquired
damage to brain, not degenerative
developmental
happens during growth and progressess
problems with lang
semantics, morphosyntax, discourse, oral and written
problems with cognition
memory, EF, insight
problems with behavior
aggression, impulsivity, depression, poor motivation, disinhibition
assessment of TBI
observations, tests, multi-disciplinary approach (nurses, PT, teachers, etc.)
intervention of TBI
- restore lost function
- compensate for impaired functioning
- adapt env. to facilitate functioning
- facilitate new learning
combo of direct and adaptive strategies
