A
  • facial weakness - smile? mouth or an eyelid dropped
  • arm weakness - can you raise both arms?
  • speech problems - speak clearly and understand what is being said

  • ABCDE approach
  • call 999
  • ensure that the airway is patent - may ne necessary to place into recovery position
  • administer 02 15lts/min
  • DO NOT OFFER ANYTHING TO EAT OR DRINK

What are the signs and symptoms of vasovagal syncope(3)

A
  • feels faint/dizzy/ light headed
  • pt may collapse and loss of consciousness
  • pallor, sweating, slow pulse, low BP, nausea/vomiting

What is the treatment of a syncope episode(4)

A
  • lie flat and elevate pts legs (pregnant pt should be placed on her side , this prevents the feotus from compressing the inferior vena cava)
  • loosen tight clothing
  • admin o2 15lts/min
  • if becomes unresponsive check for signs of life

What is the ABCDE approach for a syncope episode

A

OVERSTIMULATION OF THE VAGUS NERVE
A - patent
B - increase RR ( more than 25). decrease in Sp02, shallow breathing
C - low HR, (less than 60bpm), hypotension (90/60), pallor
D - pt alert but anxious, low blood glucose potentially
E - distressed, flustered
