What is conformity?
It is defined as the yielding to group pressure.
What is internalisation?
It is where we go along with the group’s opinion both privately and publicly because we genuinely believe the group is right.
What is compliance?
It is a superficial and temporary type of conformity because compliance ends as soon as group pressure ends.
What is identification?
It is where we change our private beliefs in the presence of the majority but not permanently.
What is NSI?
It is where we conform to the majority because we have the desire to be liked and do not want to be rejected- results in compliance.
What is ISI?
It is where we conform to the majority because we believe that they have the better information and it is driven by the desire for the individual to be correct-results in internalisation.
What is an advantage for NSI as an explanation of conformity?
Lucas et al- asked students to give answers to maths problems
- greater conformity to incorrect answers when they were difficult.
What is a disadvantage for NSI being an explanation of conformity?
-individual differences (not everyone’s behaviour is affected in the same way by NSI
-McGhee and Teevan founds students high in need for affiliation were more likely to conform
-desire to be liked underlies conformity for some people more than others.
What is a disadvantage for ISI being an explanation of conformity?
-ISI doesn’t affect everyone in the same way
-ASCH’s students were less conformist than other P’s
-Perrin and Spencer found very little conformity in study involving science and engineering
