Nationalities?

A

Crucially throughout the Revolution a percentage of the army continued to fight the war partly to win the war and partly to keep control of vital territories such as Poland for industry and Ukraine for grain

It was important for the provisional government as well as tsar to continue the war as at this points in time while Russia still was in control of the grain producing Ukraine

they had lost the industrial Center that was Poland and they needed to continue the war to make sure they didn’t lose it forever

This time the conscription rebellion was still going on and it was possibly prolonged due to the Revolution loosening Russia’s grip on the central Asian nationalities

– as the provisional government would stay focused on the Western Front and have less of a focus on the central Asian nationalities increasing the chance that they would continue to oppose Russia

Economy?

A

• strikes started in January the 9th 1917 to mark the anniversary of Bloody Sunday these strikes words do with the war as well as low food rations and conditions

– rise in food prices was met with a 300% cost of living increase

– the striking situation in Russia was also highly negative on the economy due to the fact that it’s fuels itself:
– v production leads to ^ food prices which leads to strikes which leads to v production

• this escalated however on the 22nd of February on international women’s day as more people and workers came out to strike and this strike slowly turned into a political one

• nevertheless the strike meant that there was a decrease in production

– furthermore the large majority of Russia’s industry was located in Poland which was currently under German and Austria-hungry control

• as well as the fact Germany was a major importer of Russian goods so the war was not good for the economy cuz battling their major source of income

Turning Point?

A

The major turning point of the February revolution in 1917 was the fact that Nicholas and the Romanov Dynasty had ended

and the dual power system the provisional government as well as radical workers and soviets were now the dominant form of governments even if they weren’t legitimate in Russia

• this discourse between the power systems of the provisional governments would lead to the October revolution a few months later which would then see another political change from that of a pseudo democracy to a communist one party state
