-Big rocks may need to be removed
-Plough pan may need to be removed. (By subsoiling= better drainage and makes soil easier to cultivate)
-Roots must be burnt or can harbour disease
-Manure, compost, fertilisers applied to increase nutrients and organic matter in soil.
Ploughing, adjust PH (acidic soils eg in Beaujolais- lime sprayed then ploughed in).
Topography- steep slopes in Duero Valley- tuned into terraces= flat land
