What is Sunnah?
The life example of Muhammad’s words + deeds. Primary source of guildence for Muslims
What are the five pillars of Islam?
1) Shahadah - tesimony of faith - only one god - explains reason for all pillars
2) Salat - ritual worship - call to prayer - 5 times daily (pre dawn to sunset)
3) Sawm - fasting, especially during the month of Ramadan
4) Zakat - yearly tax, belief the community/relgion
5) Hajj - Pilgrimage (religious journey) to Mecca for holy transformation
What is Kaaba?
Small stone building/shine in Mecca
What is Qur’an?
Scripture - 114 surahs (chapters) - longest to shortest
Main themes:
1) unity of god (Allah) - unknowable, incoceivable, 100 names
2) prophethood - all prophets bring the same message from the same god
3) day of reckoning - day of reward and punishment, day of resurrection, day of judgement
Who is Muhammad?
- Founder of Islam, “the great prophet”, born in Mecca
- messenger of god
What are the dietary laws?
Forbidden meats
1) not slaughtered - blood not drained
2) pork
3) slaughter that wasn’t perfornmed in the name of god
Who is Sunni?
- believe Muhammad didn’t declare a successor (caliphate)
- think it should be Abu Bakr
Who is Shi’a
- believe Muhammad designated his cousin and son-in-law, ali, to be the successor
What is Shariah?
- Sacred law
- “law of god”
- the “straight way” -> leads faithful to paradise
- gods plan for the ordering of human society
What are the human actions?
- either bring rewards or punishment on the day of judgement
1) lawful (#halal) = obligatory
2) commendable = therefore recommended
3) neutral = therefore permitted
4) reprehensible = therefore disliked
5) unlawful (haram) = forbidden
What are the two fold strucutre and way of life?
Worship: explains how to preform the five pillars
Social relations: explains all social relations (ex, between men and women)
