Who was/is Jesus?
- Mom = Virgin Mary
- Jewish: vision while fasting - healing/teaching career
- critized jewish leadership - jews didn’t like him -> crucified
- > resurrected 3 days later
What are the 2 foundation rituals?
1) Baptism
2) Euchrist - communion - shared meal (cracker and wine) which models the last supper - bread represents his body and wine is his blood (physical body of jesus)

- Decreed by Emperor Constantine
- Leaglized Christanity in Rome
- 10 yrs later it offically became the religion of the Roman Empire
- Christians no longer matyred for showing faith in Christ
What does Martyr mean?
Christians who have died for their faith
What does Trinity mean?
God exists in 3 people father, son and holy spirit

What does reformation mean?
People made about:
- abuse of indulgences
- popes abuse of power
- latin was for smart people

Martin Luther: worte 95 thesises about what was wrong with Catholic church - requested reforms
John Calvin: believed in predestination
ulrich Zwingli: didn’t like people eating “body and blood” of Christ
King Henry 8th - founded church of england - mostly bc he wanted to dump mary (cuz divorce was a sin in Catholic church)
What is counter reformation?
- response to the reformation to regain churches authority
- effort to internally refomr Catholic church
What is the council of trent?
- focused on reform and led to early modern catholicism
- ended protestant reform
What are monastics?
lay people (non-priests) who dedicate their lives to god - vows of poverty or celibacy
