H&S Flashcards
What is the role of infectious disease surveillance?
- Describe the current epidemiology of a condition
- Monitor trends
- Identify trends
Describe the three aspects of descriptive epidemiology
(Same as neuro orientation)
Time: When? Seasonal? Clustered, or consistent level of diagnoses?
Place: Where? Specific countries? Global?
Person: Gender? Age? Risk factors/common threads?
What is the name of the set of criteria that must be met in order for a notifiable disease to be present (and therefore reported)
Case definition
What are the challenges that Australia and other countries face in health surveillance?
- Data from many sources (complex management)
- Uneven distribution of computing technology
- Reporting burden (takes lots of time; may not be able to be reported on time)
- Lack/complexity/changing of case definitions
Indigenous Health Social Determinants

- Housing
Indigenous Health Cultural Determinants
- Disconnect from traditional way of life

- Lead paint
- Close proximity to mining/smelting
What are downstream effects of lead exposure
- Decreased IQ
- Learning difficulties
- Stunted growth
- Weight loss
- Hearing loss
