Consequences of the Yalta Conference Flashcards
1
Q
1st consequence
A
The first effect of the Yalta Conference was that the tension between the Big Three seemed to decrease due to their agreements on the ways forward for post-war Europe.
- Germany would be divided into 4 zones each controlled by a different power, the USA, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union
- A united nation would be set up in which all nations could join
- Germany would pay $20 billion in reparations, half of which would go to the Soviet Union
- The nazi party would be banned and war criminals prosecuted
-> The three countries seemed to agree, improving superpower relations
2
Q
2nd consequence
A
The second effect was that tension between America and the Soviet Union was created after the conference due to their different interpretations of ‘democracy’ and ‘free elections’
- To Roosevelt, this meant the American system of free speech
- stalin’s idea of democracy was a communist one where the communist party represented the people and no opposition was allowed
-> Yalta raised false expectations in the USA and they were greatly disappointed when Stalin did not allow Western-style government to be set out in Eastern Europe, increasing tension between the two countries
