Changes of state, atomic structure, and periodic table Flashcards
How do changes of state occur?
when matter transforms from one state to another. ex. liquid (water) to solid (ice)
What happens when temp increases?
particles gain energy and move faster and farther apart.
What is a melting point?
the temp at which a substance melts
Boiling point?
the temp at which a substance boils
What is diffusion?
the movement of particles from an area of high concentration to low concentration.
Solid, liquids, gases, expand?
when heated.
Solid, liquids, gases contract?
When cooled.
What is the meaning of thermal expansion?
is the increase in volume of a substance when its temperature is increased. ex. heating increases kinetic energy particles
What is the meaning of thermal contraction?
it is the decrease in volume of a substance when its temperature is lowered. ex. cooling, decreases kinetic energy of particles.
Order and meaning:
vaporization: liquid to gas
condensation: gas to liquid
freezing: liquid to solid
melting: solid to liquid
deposition: gas to solid
sublimation: solid to gas
Identify the following: tomato soup, air, manganese, and carbon dioxide.
tomato soup: mixture
air: mixture
manganese: element
carbon dioxide: compund
