Q

Chemical properties: (two things)

A

-ability of matter to react with another substance to form one or more new substances.
-can only be observed what a substance chemically interacts, or reacts with.

16
Q

Reactivity with acids:

A

some substances react vigorously with acids and others do not. ex. baking soda and vinegar produce gas

17
Q

reactivity with oxygen

A

substances in some foods react with oxygen when exposed to air. eg, avocados turning brown

18
Q

combustibility

A

ability of material to catch fire and burn in the air. ex. burning wood

19
Q

lack of reactivity

A

substances that do not react with other substances are inert. ex. helium in balloons

20
Q

What is physical change?

A

change of matter that does not change its chemical identity or composition. ex. cutting paper into pieces

21
Q

What is chemical change?

A

changes of matter that produce one or more products. ex. toasting bread

22
Q

What are the steps on how we know a new chemical has formed?

A
  1. a new substance or material appears
  2. emission, sound or light are given off
  3. bubbles of gas are formed
  4. a solid material appears when two liquids are mixed (a precitipate)
23
Q

Qualitative data;

A

can be observed and compared using words. ex. 5 senses.

24
Q

QuantitATIVE data:

A

can be measured and recorded using numbers

25
Q

Matter can be classified as:

A

Mixture which can be seperated into part by phyical changes

26
Q

Pure substances

A

elements: cannot be sepreated or broken down by physical or chemical changes
compunds: can be boken down into 2 or more elements by chemcial changes but not by physical
