Secondary Storage Flashcards
solid state storage
-collection of circuts wired together to store binary data
-no moving pARTS
-durable
-fast read and write speeds
-silent when running and require less power
downsides of solid state
typically expensive
lower capacity of magnetic storage
can be unreliable - read write limit due to heat
optical storage
uses light to read and store data
laser burns marks into the reflective surface of the disk
marks are called pits and gaps are called lands
how does optical storage work
-discs spin and the laser burns pits onto reflective surface
-to read data, laser is set to a low power and shone on the disc
-a light sensor reads the light that is reflected
-pits do not reflect light (0) but lands do (1)
3 formats of optical storage
rom
write once R
rewritable
benefits and drawbacks of optical storage
cheap
portable
reliable
slow read speeds
limitefd resusability
magnetic storage
adv
-high capacity reuseable
cheap
faster speeds
disadv
damaged if dropped
slower read speeds than solid state
require a lot of power
cloud storage
online storage service
access files via the internet
benefits
capacity can expand as you need
files can be accessed anywhere in the world
sharing files is easier enabling collaboration
increased storage backups are easier to arrange
no staff required
cheap/free
disadvs
-relies on internet connection
-requires stable connection bandwidth
-vulnerable to hackers
-cost and ownership
-can be slow
