there was a small ash cloud, but the biggest threat was the lava flow which split into three arms and disected the city.

  • there was increased volcanic activity earlier in the year that suggested that another eruption was possible, the Goma volcano observatory functions were limited by budget cuts and limited fiscal means.
  • Congolses government launched a project to relocate people to temporary camps before encouraging them to move to a new village development for their permanent resettlement
  • one year after eruption with lava still steaming, houses have begun to be built on the new lava fields (dangerous)
  • 2 years after eruption, 300 new structures have been built on the lava flows
