Use of mass spectrometry
A
Used to determine the accurate gfm of a compound. Can also give info about structural arrangement of a compound.

How it works
A
Injected sample is vaporized and the bombarded with high energy electrons. Which removes electrons from the molecule, causing positively charged ions.
These ions break into smaller +ive ion fragments. The fragments are then accerlated into a beam which is deflected by a magnetic field.Degree of deflection is dependent on m/z ratio of the ions
