Q

What are the steps to do the Lewis Structure ?

A
  1. calculate total valence e- (use group #):
    - for cations: remove e-
    - for anions: add e-
  2. calculate # of bonds it forms (also use group # BUT):
    - Group 15: 3-5
    - Group 16: 2
    - Group 17: 1
  3. game time

*make sure to double-check once completed !!

Practice: Lewis Structure

C2 H6 O

A
  1. (2 x 4) + (6 x 1) + (6) = 20 ve-
  2. bonds: C: 4, H: 1, O: 2
  3. search it up (idk how to put it here) :pp

Q

What is a sigma and pi bond ?

A
  • sigma: single bond; allows rotation
  • pi: any other bonds; doesn’t allow rotation (would break it)

Q

How to find Hybridization ?

A
  1. count all # of atoms - lone pairs (BONDED TO CENTRAL)
  2. answer: 4 = sp^3
    3 = sp^2
    2 = sp
